Education and Administration Officer – 25-30 hours pw (negotiable)

Location Knockrow (near Byron Bay Far North NSW)

The Macadamia Castle established in 1975 is designated as a State Significant Tourist Attraction with over 200,000 visitors per year. It is an important part of the local community and a favourite destination for parents, school and other groups as well as those holidaying in our idyllic area. We have many exciting features such as:

  • Nocturnal House
  • Kangaroo walk
  • Koalas
  • Free flight bird show
  • Frog Conservation Pod

Currently we focus on local species and farmyard animals.Our overall objective is conservation, education and entertainment.

This is a dual role that will include a balance of practical, hands on conservation education as well as behind the scenes preparation and administration support duties. We are searching for an individual who is passionate about wildlife conservation and knowledgeable about Australian biodiversity. 

Responsibilities of the Education and Administration officer include

  • Provide face to face educational activities, information and tailored packages to groups of children and/or adults at Macadamia Castle
  • Organise pre and post visit information packs and information to be sent to education groups.
  • Ensure a professional presentation that ensures participants have a positive impression of Macadamia Castle
  • Collect feedback from education groups, enter into database, and follow up as required.
  • Research, and create new programs as required and ensure that existing programs are up to date with the NSW Science Curriculum
  • Ensure our DPI certificates are up to date and on display
  • Complete DPI annual returns and lodge
  • Regular safety inspection and follow up
  • Purchase of occasional Park consumables such as hand washes, lorikeet food etc
  • Monitor rotation of Farmyard Animals
  • Managing school work experience students and paperwork
  • Establishing a skills record for staff and ensuring staff are up-skilled
  • Facilities management supervision
  • Weekly management report

This position is to cover 1 year maternity leave with the possibility of continued employment following this. 

The selection criteria we would like addressed in your application are:

At least 5 years’ experience in conservation education as well as administration experience.

Able to design an enclosure to DPI standards and supervise construction.

Minimum  Cert III in Captive animals or a Bachelor Degree in Wildlife Biology or Zoology or equivalent. Relevant qualification in teaching. 

High level of computer competency including 

  • Office 365
  • Google Docs
  • Dropbox
  • Databases (we use FileMaker Pro but experience in any database OK)
  • Remote Access
  • Filemaker

  • Above average computer literacy
